Olentangy’s grading policy is available on page 22 of the student handbook.
Adjusting the curriculum to better prepare students for the 21st century is embedded in Olentangy’s Continuous Improvement Plan. The idea of adding Chinese language is something the district has been and will continue to consider. However, the district must also find a way to implement this suggestion in the most cost effective manner for the community.
Currently, the district is contemplating a plan that through technology may allow for this type of curricular goal without adding three teachers (one for each high school) to the district’s payroll. However this plan is in the early stages of development and is dependent upon the district having a more secure revenue stream to fully support this effort. This is a great topic that will develop over time.
Every year, students complete a series of tasks and questions during kindergarten registration. These assessments are designed to provide the district with a general idea of the students’ development, strengths and areas for improvement. This way the school may provide the appropriate level of educational services to meet the needs of each student. Students who are in the highest academic need categories based upon these assessments will be offered the opportunity to participate in Olentangy’s all-day everyday kindergarten program during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.
During the 2009-10 school year Olentangy Local Schools developed a plan to gradually implement an all-day, everyday kindergarten program as required under House Bill (HB) 1. This plan was submitted to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) in May 2010 and the district applied for a complete waiver for the 2010-11 school year. This waiver was requested, as Olentangy Local Schools does not have the classroom space or operating revenue to support such an extensive program. ODE approved the 2010-11 waiver in June 2010.
Olentangy intends to seek a waiver from ODE this fall for implementation of the all-day, everyday kindergarten program for the 2011-12 school year. Instead of the full program in 2011-12, the district plans to identify and provide services to those students who are in the greatest academic need categories. Olentangy then plans to move to full implementation for all students beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
Additional information related to Olentangy’s challenges and solutions for implementing an all-day, everyday kindergarten program is available through the district’s website.
Curriculum Day is an opportunity for all Olentangy teachers to work together on the district’s overall Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP). The CIP is the overall map of how Olentangy Local Schools is going to achieve even higher levels of academic excellence and the mission of facilitating maximum learning for every student.
Olentangy has identified three major factors that when combined, get to the heart of learning: curriculum, assessment and instruction. Curriculum has been the major focus of the district’s professional development for staff over the past two year. This year, teachers are taking a closer look at assessment. For instance, school administrators are leading conversations and activities that ask questions such as how to develop a better assessment tool, balancing various types of assessments, how to use assessment data to improve the educational outcomes for students, etc. Curriculum Days allow for more in-depth analysis of this important work.
