Enrollment

Olentangy’s limited all-day everyday kindergarten program is designed to provide additional academic and social assistance to approximately 300 students most in need of these services.  Students were invited to join the program based on their performance on the screenings administered during kindergarten registration appointments.

Students must live within the Olentangy school district boundaries to attend Olentangy schools. There are some Ohio school districts that allow open enrollment, but Olentangy is not one of them. Click here to learn more about which Ohio districts allow open enrollment.

Olentangy’s grading policy is available on page 22 of the student handbook.

There are three ways a student from another country could attend Olentangy schools:

  • A parent could establish a legal residence within the district and live there with the student.
  • The student could come here through an officially recognized foreign exchange student program. The student would need to contact an organization in his or her home country. Olentangy is currently full for the 2012-2011 year.
  • The parents would have to give custody or guardianship to a family friend currently living in the Olentangy district.  This would have to go through the court in the child’s home country.

All Olentangy residents are welcome to apply for an intradistrict transfer. Parents can learn more about this process by clicking here or by asking the New Student Welcome Center staff during the registration process.

Olentangy Local Schools has been Ohio’s fastest growing school district for the past seven years.  According to the September student enrollment report, the district’s enrollment is currently at 15,888 students.  That figure is 142 students above the projections that the Board of Education approved in October 2009.  In addition, Olentangy Local Schools has seen a reduction in financial support from the state.  This combination of more students while receiving less money creates a difficult situation for the district and the community.

While the district appreciates the cultural benefits of hosting foreign exchange students, the reality is that Olentangy is already facing the challenges of educating students who live in the district on a full-time basis and does not have the capacity or financial resources to host an unlimited number of “extra” students.  This is why the administration has limited foreign exchange students at the high school level to one per guidance counselor that is on staff.
