BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Today for Black History Month we are highlighting Ella Fitzgerald. Ella Fitzgerald was one of the most notable singers of the 20th century, and a significant artist in the emergence of jazz. A performance at the Apollo Theater’s famed Amateur Night in 1934 set Fitzgerald’s career in motion. Over the next seven decades, she worked with some of the most important artists in the music industry including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Sinatra.
SCHEDULING MEETING FOR PARENTS 2/9: There will be a scheduling meeting for parents of students in the 8th grade who will be attending OOHS in the fall, AND any current parent who may have questions about the scheduling process. The meeting will be in the Orange High School Theater on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. See the tentative scheduling timeline attached.
SWIM TEAM PARENT MEETING 2/10
There will be a swim team parent meeting Wednesday, February 10 in the OOHS Commons at 7:00 p.m. All parents of high school swimmers are welcome.
SENIOR PICTURES NEEDED FOR SENIOR VIDEO
Seniors it’s time to collect pictures for the senior video! Please email pictures to oohspics10@yahoo.com. We need 3 pictures of you, 1 as a baby, 1 in grade school and 1 current picture. You many also submit 2 group pictures of OOHS seniors at any age. All pictures need to include your full name and age during photo. You may also submit actual photos to Mrs. Nicholson in the main office. Please include name and age on the back of the photo. If you are submitting group pictures, all people in the photo need to be OOHS seniors and need to be identified. The deadline for submitting pictures is March 18th. Don’t be left out of this memorable video, we want all members of the class of 2010 represented!

Yearbook is looking for OOHS graduating seniors who have attended Olentangy Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade for a group picture. Please come to the main office and tell Mrs. Nicholson if you have are a ‘LIFER’ in Olentangy.
TRANSITION FAIR TONIGHT 2/8
Join the Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Delaware area schools for a night filled with information that will help your student transition from high school into their future. This fair will take place at Olentangy Liberty High School from 5:30 -7:30pm on Monday, February 8. Co-Sponsored by: Olentangy Schools, Delaware City Schools, Big Walnut Schools, Buckeye Valley Schools, Delaware Area Career Centers, and Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Representative will be available to discuss: Career & Technical Education Programs, Parks and Recreation Programs, Day Habilitation Options, Independent Living Supports, Bureau of Vocation Rehabilitation, Estate Planning and Special Needs Trusts, Special Olympics, Financial Supports, Employment Supports and Transportation Options.
RESCHEDULING FOR ACT
Due to the weather conditions, ACT testing was canceled Saturday, February 6th. The test will be rescheduled. Rescheduled dates must come directly from ACT, they will most likely be in the next few weeks. As soon as dates are set they will be posted on www.actstudent.org
ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB COLLECTING USED GREETING CARDS TOMORROW
Environmental Club is hosting a competition between all 2nd period classes tomorrow. We’re collecting gently used, all occasion greeting cards on February 9th. The class that brings in the most cards wins a class breakfast. All greeting cards will be sent to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, an organization for abused, abandoned and neglected children. Please help us support their recycled card program. So, all those holiday cards that your family has still hanging around the house, bring them in for the contest!
TRACK MEETING 2/22
There will be a meeting for all boys and girls interested in participating in outdoor track this season. It will take place on Monday, February 22 at 6 pm in room 1201. Please see Coach Lehman or Coach Simpson if you cannot attend or have questions.
FCA MEETING 2/10
FCA will meet this Wednesday before school in Ms. Park’s classroom, room 1103. Please attend and bring a friend. All students are welcome.

On Wednesday, February 10 Orange ITK’s team will compete against Olentangy High School and Liberty High School at Liberty High School for the league title. Please come out and support your Orange ITK and wish them good luck!
DELAWARE AREA CAREER CENTER OPEN HOUSE 2/11
The Delaware Area Career Center is holding an open house on February 11th from 5-8pm. If you have a student who might be interested in learning more about the programs that are being offered, this would be a great opportunity!
SENIOR ADS FOR YEARBOOK
Get your senior ad in the yearbook today! You received a flier to purchase a senior ad in the yearbook with second quarter grade cards. These ads allow you to have your son or daughter featured in the back of the yearbook with a picture of your choice and a special good luck message. The ads vary in size and cost, and payment (cash or check made out to The Bronze Bayonet) and art (a photo and good luck message) are due Friday, March 12. Please refer to the flier for more details. The order forms are also posted on the high school’s Web site. Feel free to contact adviser Kari Phillips with any questions. All proceeds will help fund the yearbook for our first graduating class!
YEARBOOK ORDERS
Parents, buy your child’s 2009-10 yearbook, The Bronze Bayonet! Even if the date on the yearbook order form you received in the mail has expired, you can still purchase your child’s yearbook online until April of this year. You should also receive another order form in the mail sometime this spring. Follow the instructions below for how to purchase yours online today.

2. At the bottom right corner of the page, click on the icon that says, “Locate your school.”
3. Enter Ohio for the state and Lewis Center for the city.
4. Click on the Olentangy Orange High School link.
5. Click on “Go” under “Order History” to start your order.

OLENTANGY SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR COMMUNITY COMMITTEES
The Olentangy Local School District is creating several new community committees. The School Funding Action Committee (SFAC), Cost Efficiency and Communications committees are three such groups that are currently seeking new members. The SFAC is a board committee that was originally created in 2004. This group educates Olentangy residents about the school funding process and works to educate local and state representatives as to how decisions regarding school funding may impact the district.
The Cost Efficiency Committee was previously a board subcommittee of the Finance and Audit Committee and included seven members. The group is being moved to the Superintendent’s Office and is seeking additional members at this time. These members will work with the administration to identify and research various cost-savings ideas for the district to implement. The Communications Committee is a new group that is made up of resident’s with expertise in the filed of communications. Members will assist the district by conducting research, generating new ideas and providing feedback on current projects to enhance the district’s communications initiatives.
The deadline to apply for all three committees is Friday, February 19. Residents may find application and additional information related to these committees via the district’s Web site at www.olentangy.k12.oh.us/volunteer.html . Additional committees will be named in the near future so community members are encouraged to check back often for additional opportunities to volunteer their time and talents.
SWIM TEAM VALENTINE COOKIE SALE
Want to make someone’s Valentines day? Send them a home made cookie on Friday, February 12 in first period. Just complete and return the attached order form and just $1 to the school office in an envelope marked ” Swim Team Valentine Cookie Sale.” Order your cookies until Thursday, February 11. Make their day and give them something sweet to enjoy.

OLENTANGY’S PARENT PROGRAM TEAM OFFERS SEMINAR ON 2/10 – HELPING KIDS USE ATHLETICS FOR LIFE SUCCESS: Simple Steps for Sports Parents
Meet and learn from Chris Stankovich, Ph.D. Dr. Stankovich is an athletic counselor and nationally respected author and lecturer in the field of sports and health performance science. Known as “The Sports Doc,” on Ohio News Network (ONN), he is also a featured columnist for Columbus Parent magazine and a contributor to High School Today. This fun and interactive presentation is a must for adults, as he will discuss key variables that can make – or break – your child’s overall experience with interscholastic sports. This program will take place on Wednesday, February 10 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Olentangy High School. Free babysitting is available!
DRAMA ANNOUNCES WINTER SHOW – SENIOR DIRECTED ONE ACT PLAYS 2/11 & 2/12
OOHS Orangelight Productions proudly announces our Winter Show — Senior Directed One Act Plays.The five plays are each directed by a pair of seniors and range in genre from suspense to comedy to drama. The directors have been responsible for each step toward the completion of their production, from choosing the show to the performance night. All students involved have worked very hard and have created entertaining productions. Limbo, The Monkey’s Paw and Sorry, Wrong Number will perform on Thursday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Check, Please and Props will perform on Friday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the box office on the night of the performances and cost $5 for one night and $8 for two nights. Tickets will also be sold in the main office the week of the performances. We invite you to come and enjoy the shows!
MARTIN W. ESSEX SCHOOL FOR THE GIFTED – ESSAY DUE 2/12
Any junior interested in attending the 2010 Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted must submit the essay portion of the application to Student Services by Feb. 12, 2010. The Essex School is held annually at The Ohio State University during the summer months. The curriculum consists of seminars and workshops in a variety of topics including the arts, sciences and humanities. Students are encouraged to participate in extended projects, such as a talent show, a CD that chronicles the events of the week and a research study. The overall curriculum is designed to provide enrichment opportunities that reach beyond the average high school experience The essay prompts may be found at www.ssco.org/essex/index.htm After a review of the essays, two OOHS candidates will be chosen to submit the remainder of the application by March 5. An Olentangy School’s central office team will review the applications and select two candidates from the three high schools to go forward in the application process.
GALA ART AUCTION FOR POP ARTS 3/6
POP Arts (Patrons of Orange Performing Arts) Booster organization that supports performing arts for OOHS, OOMS and the feeder elementary schools is hosting a Gala Art Auction on Saturday, March 6th at York Golf Club. We are working with Marlin Art of New York and will have approximately 160 pieces of art for auction. Preview of the art is at 7pm and auction starts at 8pm. Students from various performing art groups will be will be providing entertainment. Tickets are $10 a piece and 100% of the ticket sales goes back to POP Arts. Join us for a fun evening and a great way to earn money for our performing arts.
