Student/School Accomplishments

Forty-four Olentangy students earned perfect scores on a section of the spring 2011 Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) or Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).

The tests are state-standards based assessments. The OGT is for high school students, while the OAA is for students in grades three through eight. Students in each of those grades are tested in reading and mathematics. Students in grades five and eight are also tested in science. OAA and OGT results account for 24 of the 26 indicators included in the Ohio Department of Education’s annual local report card. Olentangy met all 26 indicators on the 2010-11 report card.

Olentangy Orange Middle School students in teams 604 and 605 planted daffodils and other bulbs in several locations outside of Olentangy Orange High School (OOHS) this week. The landscaping project was part of the students’ observance of Make a Difference Day as well as a way to thank the school for hosting them for the 2010-11 school year.

Recycling is becoming a fun part of the lunchtime routine at Alum Creek Elementary School (ACES). This week the school launched a program that allows students to recycle their milk containers. In just the first three days of the program, students recycled more than 1,000 plastic bottles.

The idea to recycle milk bottles came from four fifth-grade students. They sent a letter to ACES administrators, who were happy to help set the program in motion.

Students at Olentangy Liberty High School (OLHS) were lined up as early as 3 a.m. today in hopes of earning the the right to use a favorite historical film as the basis for a multimedia research project. Each of the 143 sophomores participating in this unit had to select a movie, but no movie could be used by more than one student, creating a friendly battle over the most popular films. The film selection process took place before classes began at 7:20 a.m.

Now that the movies are assigned, students will spend the next two months working on research papers and creating multimedia presentations about the historical accuracy of the films. Final projects will be presented the evening of Wednesday, January 5, 2011. Participating in this learning exercise supports the writing process benchmarks of the language arts curriculum and the historical data benchmarks of the U.S. history curriculum.

Students at Olentangy Hyatts Middle School (OHMS) traded in their lab desks and notebooks for a swimming pool and scuba gear this month. Twenty-four students spent part of Friday, September 17 running experiments about density in the pool at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in scuba gear they rented from Aqua Gym. Participating in this hands-on learning experience supported several indicators in the physical science portion of the eighth-grade science curriculum.

Five Olentangy students have qualified as Semifinalists in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program, giving them a chance to compete for approximately 8,400 scholarships worth more than $36 million.
