Fourth-grade students at Walnut Creek Elementary School (WCES) held a Cultural Celebration Day this month.  Students researched their family heritage and shared stories and artifacts with their class.  The event also featured favorite family recipes, banners and student performances.

Students in Ms. Lawrence’s first-grade class at Alum Creek Elementary School (ACES) demonstrated their out-loud reading skills with family members during a Readers’ Theater event on March 11.  The students shared their knowledge of the folk tale genre, read aloud four different folk tales and then concluded by performing a musical version of the folk tales.  This event supported several indicators in the elementary language arts curriculum including being able to read aloud with changes in emphasis, voice, timing and expression that show recognition of punctuation and understanding of meaning.

Students from Olentangy Orange High School (OOHS) traveled back in time to experience the culture, clothing, health care, nutrition and careers of the Renaissance this month.  The program, featuring the costumes and expertise of Kit Matulich from Dalmatian Alley, was presented to students in speech and world history classes.  Other students were allowed to attend the presentation during study hall periods.

Superintendent Wade Lucas, Ed.D., recently visited with students at Tyler Run Elementary School (TRES) who are studying data analysis and learning to be educated consumers of information. Dr. Lucas gave some practical examples of how the district uses data to compare its progress with similar districts. Teacher Rebecca Dittman said the overall message of the unit was to understand why it is so important to know what questions to ask about data and how to make reasonable inferences from that information.

Olentangy Local Schools is launching its second-annual community education opportunity this month, a four-part class called “School Finance 101.”

“The class was a great success last year, and we are excited to be able to offer it again,” said Superintendent Wade Lucas, Ed.D. “School finance is one topic that affects every single person in our community in one way or another. We’re happy to help shed some light on this complex issue.”

Two members of the Olentangy Liberty High School (OLHS) speech team recently earned honors at the Ohio High School Speech League state finals and qualified for spots in a national tournament. Congratulations to Ryan M. for placing among the top 24 in the state. Congratulations to Grace P. for finishing third in the tournament and becoming the first-ever state finalist in OLHS history. Both students will compete in the National Forensic League’s national tournament in Dallas, Texas in June.

The third annual Jump Rope for Heart event at Scioto Ridge Elementary School (SRES) raised $18,430 for the American Heart Association. All students participated in heart-healthy activities related to jumping rope during physical education classes February 14 through 18. Many students also chose to engage in the optional fundraising portion of the program. The top fundraising class in the school was Ann Christopher’s fourth-grade class with a total of $8,437. Congratulations to the school’s top individual fundraiser, a fourth-grade student who raised $6,592 herself. In honor of her achievements, she and her family were invited to attend a recent meeting of the American Heart Association’s Board of Directors. During that meeting they were treated to a tour of the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which directly benefits from the funds raised by the SRES students through grants from the American Heart Association.

Olentangy Liberty High School (OLHS) DECA today presented a check for $8,000 to Honor Flight Columbus, a charity that flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials built in honor of their service.  The students in the DECA program, an international association of marketing students, held a series of fundraiser to collect the funds and co-sponsor a flight.

The Invisible Children Club at Olentangy Orange High School (OOHS) recently collected 6,000 books for children in Uganda through a districtwide drive.

Second-grade students at Oak Creek Elementary School (OCES) each chose a historical figure to study and then created a costume and monologue to represent how that person contributed to our society. During the Night at the Wax Museum event in February, OCES parents were invited in and given a pretend remote control. The students dressed in costume and stood silently until someone used a “remote control” to start their speech.
