Olentangy Local Schools will be changing its operating hours during summer break in order to minimize utility costs.
From June 13 through August 5, full-time summer staff members will work 10-hour days Monday through Thursday. The buildings will be closed on Fridays. This will allow the district to keep the air conditioning turned off Friday through Monday. In addition, the air conditioning will be turned on for only part of the day during workdays. [Read more…]
The Hyatts Film Festival drew 274 people to the Arena Grand Theatre in Columbus on Monday, May 23. The annual event showcases student-made movies and highlights the Eagle News program at Hyatts. This year’s theme was “My Life, My Lens.” Congratulations to the following award winners:

Congratulations to the Wyandot Walkers from Wyandot Run Elementary School (WRES). The Relay for Life team raised $5000 for the American Cancer Society, earned gold level status and a rookie team of the year award during last weekend’s 2011 Relay for Life Olentangy event. Thanks to teachers Kara Bussard, Susanne Sleeper and Cindy Rooney for their work organizing the team.
Third-grade student Samantha F. from Oak Creek Elementary School earned the grand prize at the 15th Annual Regional Invention Convention held Saturday, May 21 at COSI in Columbus. Samantha’s invention, “Super Bowling Shoes,” are shoe soles for bowling that fit right over your regular shoes. For her creativity and problem-solving skills Samantha was given the Edison Award and a $2,500 college scholarship.
In all 344 students from across central Ohio took part in the event. Six students were named first-place winners and awarded $500 scholarships. Fifty other students earned $50 savings bonds and nine of those students were from Olentangy. Congratulations to:
Five students from the district’s middle schools have been selected to participate in a benefit concert for Nationwide Children’s Hospital on Monday, June 6 at the Hyatt on Capital Square in Columbus. Hyatt Chef C. David Wolf treated these students and their friends and families to a gourmet meal prepared by him and Olentangy food service workers at Olentangy Shanahan Middle School (OLMS) on Tuesday, May 17. The performers were picked due to their extrodinary talents in art, music, dance and drama. The meal was a special thank-you for their participation in the concert.

Seventh-grade students from Olentangy Orange Middle School (OOMS) spent a day at the Columbus Zoo this week. The trip was a summative experience that combined learning targets from the biomes, ecology and biodiversity units in science class. A small group of students was selected to go behind the scenes to learn more about the elephants and rhinos.

The Delaware General Health District (DGHD) has presented all 21 Olentangy schools with Clean Establishment Awards. The awards are given to food service operations that displayed excellent food safety and cleanliness practices during their last two inspections by health district sanitarians.
“We are very proud of these awards,” said Food Service Director Pam Riley. “Every staff member takes great pride in providing a safe and clean environment in which our students can enjoy a healthy meal.” All Olentangy food service employees recently completed the “Persons in Charge” program through DGHD. Food service managers also complete the ServSafe program developed by the National Restaurant Education Foundation.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine visited Olentangy Hyatts Middle School (OHMS) this week to encourage students to say no to underage drinking and to say yes to living a healthy lifestyle. DeWine teamed up with the Century Council to share that message with students as well as an interactive video game that reinforces the negatives of alcohol use.

Ohio State University basketball player Jared Sullinger visited Wyandot Run Elementary School (WRES) to celebrate the students’ achievements in the Hoops for Heart campaign, which raises funds for the American Heart Association while teaching children heart-healthy activities. As a whole the school raised $14,234. Sullinger spent the afternoon signing autographs and playing basketball with Ms. Waltz’s fourth-grade class, which had the highest class total of $1,620.
