Olentangy Local Schools will be changing its operating hours during summer break in order to minimize utility costs.
From June 13 through August 5, full-time summer staff members will work 10-hour days Monday through Thursday. The buildings will be closed on Fridays. This will allow the district to keep the air conditioning turned off Friday through Monday. In addition, the air conditioning will be turned on for only part of the day during workdays.
The district is projecting a savings of approximately $70,000 by minimizing the use of air conditioning during this eight-week period.
There will be some exceptions to these rules. For example, if an outside group has paid a rental fee to use district space, the rental fee will cover the cost of utilities for that time period. Also, if sensors in the buildings detect that the temperature or humidity level is high enough to damage the flooring, the air conditioning will turn on long enough to bring those levels down.
