More than 16,000 students expected on August 25

Olentangy Local Schools will celebrate the opening of Cheshire Elementary School (CES) on Sunday, August 22 at 2 p.m. CES is located at 2681 Gregory Road in Delaware and is the district’s 21st school building and 14th elementary school.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will last approximately 30 minutes. After the ribbon cutting, students, parents and community members will be invited inside the school.

On Wednesday, August 25, Olentangy Local Schools is expecting to welcome more than 16,000 students, including more than 500 at CES.

Olentangy Local Schools has been the fastest growing school district in the state of Ohio for the past seven years, adding approximately 1,000 new students each year. The district ended the 2009-10 school year with 14,967 students.

The funds to construct CES are from the $89.89 million bond package approved by voters on March 4, 2008. That package also provided the funds to build the Berkshire Bus Compound, which opened in February 2009; Freedom Trail Elementary School, which opened in August 2009; the addition to Olentangy High School, which was completed in December 2009; Olentangy Berkshire Middle School and the district’s 15th elementary school, both of which will open in 2011; as well as improvements at other facilities, technology, buses and textbooks.

CES sits on 21.64 acres of land donated to the district in 2007 by Dominion Homes. At the time of the donation, the land was valued at approximately $476,000. This is the 11th Olentangy school to be built on donated land, saving taxpayers millions of dollars.
