According to the most recent data from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), the Olentangy Local School District gained 973 students between the 2008-09 and the 2009-10 school years. This significant increase means that Olentangy is now the eighth largest district in Ohio and has been the state’s fastest growing school district for eight consecutive years.
“Olentangy offers an excellent education at an efficient price to the community,” said Olentangy Superintendent Wade Lucas, Ed.D. “That is why so many people want to be part of this success. At Olentangy Local Schools, we take the responsibility of educating all of our students very seriously.”
Olentangy Local Schools was formed in 1953-54 when four area schools closed to create a single high school. Liberty Union Elementary School was added to the same site in 1961 and for the first time all students, kindergarten through 12th grade, were housed on the same campus. In 1990, Olentangy High School opened its doors as the district’s second school.
This fall, the district opened its 21st school, Cheshire Elementary School. Two more schools (Olentangy Berkshire Middle School and Elementary #15) are currently under construction and scheduled to open in time for the 2011-12 school year. Olentangy’s November enrollment report indicates that 15,894 students are currently enrolled in the district.
