OLENTANGY HAS LOWEST EXPENDITURE IN CENTRAL OHIO, SECOND LOWEST STATEWIDE OF DISTRICTS ON LIST

Newsweek has once again named Olentangy High School (OHS) and Olentangy Liberty High School (OLHS) two of the top public high schools in America. OHS is ranked 712 with a Challenge Index score of 1.84 and an Equity and Excellence (E/E) percentage of 31; OLHS is ranked 291 with a Challenge Index score of 2.62 and an Equity and Excellence percentage of 48.

Olentangy Orange High School (OOHS) was not eligible for the 2009 list because it is based on data collected before the school opened.

The ranking system is based on the number of 2008 Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests a school gives that is then divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. This calculation provides the Challenge Index score that is then ranked from highest to lowest. The E/E rate indicates the percentage of all seniors who had at least one score on an AP test that would qualify them for college credit. The average E/E rate for all U.S. schools is about 15 percent, and both of Olentangy’s high schools are well above this average.

Only 28 high schools in Ohio were on the list. Seven of these schools are from Central Ohio: OLHS, #291; Dublin Jerome, #333; Bexley, #448; OHS, #712; Upper Arlington, #724; Dublin Coffman, #929; and Dublin Scioto, #1094. When the Newsweek list is broken down by state, OLHS is ranked seventh and OHS is 15th in Ohio.

In addition, of the 25 school districts in Ohio with at least one high school on the list, Olentangy has the lowest Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 expenditure per pupil in Central Ohio and is the second lowest for all of the districts. The only district that has a slightly lower expenditure per pupil for FY 08 is North Canton City Schools (Hoover High School), ranked #1257.

“Academic excellence is what Olentangy is all about,” said Superintendent Wade Lucas, Ed.D. “Providing students both the opportunities to take Advanced Placement courses and the support needed to succeed in those courses is vital to our mission of facilitating maximum learning for every student.”
