Seventh-grade students from Olentangy Orange Middle School (OOMS) spent a day at the Columbus Zoo this week. The trip was a summative experience that combined learning targets from the biomes, ecology and biodiversity units in science class. A small group of students was selected to go behind the scenes to learn more about the elephants and rhinos.
- The OOMS group poses with a pachyderm friend.
- Zookeeper Mindi Scott shares her expertise with students.
- OOMS student Lena M. feeds a rhino while learning the animals have only back teeth called molars.
- Scott teaches about dental care for rhinos.
- OOMS student Matt G. touches a rhino’s horn while learning it is made from keratin – the same substance as human hair and nails.
